How are the maps delivered?
Maps are delivered online, except for CD products. At the end of the checkout process, on your receipt page, you will find a link for each map product you have purchased. Each map product is delivered in a compressed Zip file. We recommend you save the Zip file to your computer's hard drive before extracting the map file. This way, you will always have the original file as a backup should it be needed.

What are the differences between map formats?
The chart below outlines the major qualities of each map format sold on PresentationMaps.com:

Illustrator
(.ai)
Illustrator is the name and native format of a very powerful graphic design software from Adobe Systems Incorporated. Maps in this format are editable, layered vector graphics offering a wide range of customization options. Output options include web site graphics to high-end print. Adobe Illustrator maps also work with many other applications, including Adobe Photoshop, GoLive, Flash, InDesign, AfterEffects and more.
PowerPoint
(WMF)
WMF is an acronym for Windows Metafile, which is basically clip art, an actual file ending in .wmf that you insert into PowerPoint and can edit. WMF Maps can be ungrouped and individual map features customized. WMF maps are great for defining territories based on geographic boundaries. Our WMF maps are compatible with desktop publishing and other MS Office applications. View our WMF map PowerPoint tutorial for editing assistance.
PowerPoint
(.PPT)
If you select a map in the .PPT format you are actually purchasing a PowerPoint presentation file with a map already placed on the slide for you. Once downloaded and unzipped, you simply open in PowerPoint the filename ending in .ppt. These maps can be ungrouped and customized the same as the WMF maps above. In addition to the main map slide, you'll find subsequent slides containing like features, or layers, from the main map. From these layers you can create a custom map by copy and pasting only the desired features to a new slide.

What applications are compatible with the maps?
Maps in Adobe Illustrator format delivered on PresentationMaps.com are in Illustrator version 8 format, which allows them to be opened by earlier and later Illustrator versions, as well as applications including Adobe Photoshop, GoLive, Flash, InDesign, AfterEffects and more.

WMF (windows metafile) files are non-layered and are compatible with most office software, including PowerPoint, Word and SmartDraw. WMF files can even be imported into graphic design software.

PPT (.ppt) files are actual PowerPoint presentation files that require Microsoft PowerPoint to open. Once open, map contents can be copied to other slides in the same presentation or to a different presentation, as well as to other Microsoft applications like Word, and to some design and DTP applications as well.

To determine which format works best for your application before you buy, we encourage you to try out a map from our map sample page first.

Are your Illustrator maps compatible with Adobe Illustrator CS?
Yes, you can use Illustrator maps delivered from PresentationMaps.com with Adobe Illustrator CS.

However, once you have opened one of our maps in Illustrator CS, you will need to save the map as an Illustrator CS document and you will only be able to use Illustrator CS to edit the map from then on. This is due to the new Illustrator CS text engine.

Adobe Illustrator CS introduced a new text engine that provides new functions such as character/paragraph styles and other advanced layout features. However, this new text engine is no longer backwards compatible with previous versions of Illustrator.

You can use these map files in Adobe Illustrator CS, but you will need to update the text in the map in order to make it editable. When opening one of our maps, Illustrator CS will prompt you choose whether or not you wish to update the document's text. Click the 'Update' button to convert the map's text so that it will be editable with CS.

Which PowerPoint format should I use, WMF or .PPT?
When it comes to editing a map, it doesn't matter which format you use. Maps in both PowerPoint formats we offer are customized in the same manner using the tools found in PowerPoint. The big difference between the the two formats is how the maps are delivered. WMF maps are individual files ending in .wmf that you place onto a PowerPoint slide inside an open PowerPoint presentation using the Insert command. Maps offered in the .PPT format are already placed on slides for you, so you are actually purchasing a PowerPoint presentaion file that you open into PowerPoint using the File > Open command or by double-clicking the downloaded fileame ending in .ppt. In addition, maps sold in the .PPT format have additional slides containing like features, or layers, from the main map. From these layers you can create a custom map by copy and pasting only the desired features to a new slide, new presentation or another application.

How do I get a WMF map file into PowerPoint? Edit it?
Please review our tutorial: Using WMF Clip Art Maps in PowerPoint. This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions for inserting and editing our WMF maps in PowerPoint. We've also included informative graphics at each step to match what you should see on your computer screen. This tutorial does not apply to our .PPT maps, which are actual PowerPoint presentation files and do not require the insertion of any additonal graphics to be used.

How do I open and use my PowerPoint .PPT Map?
Our .PPT maps are normal PowerPoint presentations with the map on a slide. Once the map has been downloaded and extracted from the Zip to your hard drive, it is opened just like any normal PowerPoint file, by double-clicking or using the File > Open command. The elements in the maps are ready to edit and change. Just select them with the pointer and choose some task from the Drawing bar along the bottom.

Are the maps royalty-free?
Most maps sold on PresentationMaps.com are royalty free. But because we resell many maps created by other companies, we have to honor the terms and conditions outlined by those companies. We have provided the licensing terms of each company in our affiliate program for you to review.
